The grand Mount Washington Resort was a dream brought to life for self-made millionaire and New England native, Joseph Stickney. It took over two years, 250 Italian artisans, and $1.7 million dollars to build the hotel, which had its grand opening in 1902. Just one year after the hotel’s completion, Mr. Stickney died suddenly, leaving the hotel to his wife, Princess Carolyn, who continued to summer at the hotel every year until her own death, over a decade later.

Since then, many guests of the hotel have come to believe that Princess Carolyn never completely left. Her apparition has been reported throughout the hotel and there is even a place set for her in the hotel dining room every evening. Perhaps most famously, the TAPS team, featured on the SyFy network show, Ghost Hunters, recorded clear EVP’s of the Princess conversing with them. That ghostly conversation seemed to indicate that Carolyn is still very much present at the hotel, but either unsure or perhaps unaware of what time period she is in.

In addition to the ghost of the Princess, there have many reports of paranormal activity within the hotel including: children running the halls, a dark figure haunting the recently built spa wing, and the presence of a resident spirit belonging to an old employee who is rumored to have committed suicide in the staff quarters of one of the towers.
